ATA Cases

ATA cases are shipping containers primarily used for road travel, as well as air travel. Because of their primary function, ATA cases are also known as road cases, or even roadie cases because they were originally used for storing and shipping the equipment that musicians used when they were on the road, touring. These containers were specifically built to protect sensitive equipment such as musical instruments, audio and lighting production equipment and motion picture equipment when it needed to be moved from place to place. Other essential equipment such as wardrobe, hairdressing facilities, makeup, catering and rigging were also taken on the road in ATA cases.

Because of the diverse nature of the equipment that needed to be moved, ATA cases were designed and built individually to meet the requirements of each individual band or company. Roadie cases were designed principally with the idea of airline packaging specifications in mind, which, in turn, were developed by airline packaging engineers. The International Airline Transport Association (IATA) which is based in Washington, D.C., and is made up of numerous members including, American Airlines;

Boeing Airlines; Fed-Ex; Airbus; United Airlines; Delta Airlines and Northwest Airlines, dictated ATA cases so there would be a standardized system of airline transportation. The original ATA cases, the ATA 300 Cat 1 was brought into being in the early 1960s, when all the cases had to be white to enable workers to be able to see them at night and not make the mistake of leaving them on the runway. ATA cases are separated into two separate categories: the ATA 300 Cat 1 cases, which are able to withstand 100 trips, while the Cat 2 containers are only capable of ten.

The majority of ATA cases are built with three main layers, the first being ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene); the second is a lightweight plywood, usually made from maple, birch or poplar, though higher grade ATA cases use a composite material such as Plasti-Clad. The inner layer is usually made from polyurethane or polyethylene foam to create a shock absorbent core. This can be specifically shaped to protect the contents even further by allowing them to sit inside cut outs made into the foam. The corners and edges of ATA cases are then reinforced with aluminum, sometimes coated with zinc or nickel so that any bangs or knocks will have no impact on the case.

To make transit easier, castor wheels are often fitted onto ATA cases. Even though ATA cases are typically constructed from wood, it is possible to get plastic ones that give the same attention to detail with the internal foam protection. These plastic cases can give better weather protection, too. Regardless of the construction material, though, ATA cases can be adapted and modified to suit particular clients and their particular needs and requirements. For example, power adapters and computer fans can be included so that vital equipment can still operate while traveling, but can still be kept safe within ATA cases.

Blow Molded Cases

Enhance your productivity with blow molded cases The only limitation on designing blow molded cases is the actual restrictions imposed by the blow molding process; apart from that, there is absolutely no limit to what shape your blow molded cases should be, or what function they provide. Blow molding is a common type of plastic molding, so blow molded cases are an ideal end product of the process. A plastic tubular form, called a parison, is softened inside a mold and then injected with either compressed air or gas. This makes the parison expand and take on the shape of the mold, whilst leaving a hollow centre. This technique is a popular one and is used to make a variety of containers including blow molded cases.

The benefit of the injection blow molding process is that it caters to more detailed and precision dependent products than other methods. Any improvements in the physical properties of the plastic are negligible compared to other methods because very little orientation occurs. This process is also usually limited to smaller containers like six fluid ounce bottles rather than blow molded cases. Another method of blow molding is the extrusion method. This process starts with the usual extrusion of the parison using a die not dissimilar to the one used for making plastic pipes. The parison is usually extruded between two halves of an open blow mold; when it reaches the desired size, the mold will close so blow molded cases can be formed.

Once the plastic cools down, the mold opens and any excess plastic can be trimmed away. There are some advantages to using the extrusion method to make blow molded cases such as is takes relatively little investment capital to purchase the necessary equipment, and small production runs can be set up. This method is also able to process a variety of plastics, such as PVC, PC, PP, HDPE and PETG. Stretch blow molding is yet another technique regularly used. It involves the production of hollow objects, like blow molded cases and has biaxial molecular orientation. This greatly improves physical properties in the end result. There are two distinct forms of stretch blow molding techniques: the one-stage process and the two-stage process.

In the first process, pre-forms are injection molded, conditioned to the correct temperature and blown into containers. In the second of the two processes, the first part of the procedure is identical, but then they are stored for anything between one and four days, and then blown into containers using a RHB machine (also known as a reheat-blow machine). This is an expensive method of blow molding because of the equipment used so it tends to be used for high volume items in order to maximize its efficiency, which of course, blow molded cases can be. The choice of blow molded cases that are available is almost infinite, not only of size and abilities to transport just about anything from tools to delicate biomedical equipment, but to the choice of colors. Whatever you need blow molded cases for, you can be sure there will be some to meet your transport needs.

Carrying Case
Choosing a carrying case can often be made a complicated shopping experience because of the intense marketing and advertising done by manufacturers and distributors. The key to the purchase of a carrying case that you will be delighted with is to first of all ignore the gimmicks - these are the little extras that we are told we cannot possibly live without, and instead look for an optimally designed carrying case that will help make travelling a pleasure.

The first thing you need to look at in a carrying case is the quality; even non-checked luggage can take a hammering and you do not want it falling apart strewing your underwear across the terminal.A carrying case also needs to be transportable because unless you have a legion of attendants you will need to carry it yourself at some point; and if your carrying case needs to fulfill the criteria of a carry-on, then size restrictions will determine what kind of case you are looking for.

When you are looking at the design of your carrying case, there are some details that you should consider, such as the overall shape and balance; the quality, volume, shape and arrangement of the various compartments; how accessible those compartments actually are taking into consideration different stowage situations; the type and configurations of zippers; the availability of internal tie down straps and external compression straps; the handle and strap design, and, equally important, the overall weight of the carrying case.

It is nigh on impossible to find a carrying case that meets all your requirements perfectly, but at least if you have checked out what is available against what your needs are, you will be in a better position to find one that suits you. The principal use of the carrying case really needs to be considered: if you are a globe trotter, your carrying case will have a different function to the business traveler, so purpose needs to be addressed before purchase.

In both cases, however, the weight of the carrying case is important - and lightweight is really the only option, which means no more than several pounds, and if it is a carry-on the general rule of thumb for commercial airlines is that the length plus the width plus the height should be no more than 45 inches, which is about 114cm. A non-rigid structure will mold better to your carrying case's contents and wherever you might stow it, and naturally, it must be of a sturdy construction.

The beauty of buying a carrying case is that it can be a life time investment; it will not become obsolete over a period of time so the principle things to look out for when buying a carrying case are that it is of high quality and that it is durable. These two qualities will not make it the cheapest on the market, but neither does it mean that they will be the most expensive either, especially if you are able to buy direct from the manufacturer.

Custom Cases

Sometimes an off-the-shelf case is just not up to the job; you need something a little bit different to transport your precious things. The lid of these custom cases tends to have either a sold foam filling or a convoluted one, which looks like an egg crate. These types of custom cases are designed for smaller contents and so there are restrictions on the sizes. If you want a custom fit interior, this is also possible. Fabricated foam cushions can be made with your exact specifications so that your equipment fits inside snugly - and safely. This is often the preferred type of lining for delicate electronics. Die cut foam cushions are a custom fit interior made from a steel die to your own specifications, and are great if you need many small shapes cut out.

They tend to be more economical than buying lots of small cases, but there are size limitations on these types of custom cases. Another custom fit interior for many small shapes is a water jet cut cushion. These are made by using a water jet CAD CAM driven machine to make the more intricate cut outs. Not only can you choose on how you would like your custom cases to be lined, but there is also a choice of the types of foam that can be used. Some are more expensive than others, and some have different attributes, for example, there is an anti-static foam made from either Polyethylene or Polyurethane that inhibits static build up and helps to get rid of static charge. custom cases are exactly that - they are bespoke exactly to give you total peace of mind.
